Over to my wife on this, as she’s the artistic one: “I sometimes prefer painting with gouache, because it is more opaque than watercolour and covers an area better, with less chance of seeing any pencil lines. You can also get more definition in your work, as brush strokes are more visible. This is a heavy set but beautifully presented, in a large white plastic box with handles and lugs on all four sides to keep the contents secure. Undo the lugs and you will find 56 different tubs. There is also a chart of the various colours and where they are in the box, so you won't need to lift them all to see the contents. Each colour is in its own little compartment and has a film over the top of the tub, so you have to peel the film off before you can use it, but you can see the colour as the tub is clear and the colour shows through clearly. I have left some of the film on the tubs so I can seal it closed after I have finished. There is also a double foam inlay in the lid; when you close the tub, this foam presses against the top of the paint to stop any leakage. As the paint is really thick in consistency, there is little chance of it seeping out, but it is better to be on the safe side with such luxurious paints. If you don't use a colour often, the film ensures it remains sealed until needed, and of course you can remove individual ones to take out with you if you are out and about with your easel. The paints mix well with water to provide a thinner medium when needed. They also blend well together so you can achieve the colour you need. Not cheap, but good value, as this is incredible paint.”
Love the creamy consistency and the colors are gorgeous. My only gripe is that the lid doesn’t latch properly and the foils on the cups are really hard to remove. I would actually prefer if there were individual lids for each cup instead of foil covers. I feel they stop being creamy over time. I gently spray a sheet of pallet paper and cover cups before putting on the cover. Adds humidity when closed.
Love these paints. I had bought 2 sets of the himi gouache before and loved them, so decided to invest in a larger set. This set of paint includes so many unique colours. Some of them are very similar to others but still are noticeably different. The pigment on these paints change dramatically depending on which colour you're using, but I find it isn't a problem. Again, happy about this purchase.
I love my MIYA jelly gouache! Love the color range but I love the convenience of each little pod! I let all of mine dry completely for ease of travel purposes. Then just pop out the colors I need on-site and reactivate with water! I’m obsessed! And my clients are loving my finished works with these paints!!
I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the paint. Good pigmentation, pretty good coverage, and a lot of paint for the price! Comparable to more expensive tube brands, frankly. The packaging of the jelly style paints is not my favorite. Would love someone to come up with a resealable top for the individual containers. There is such a generous amount of paint in each little tube that it leaks out when you open them, so be prepared. I am moving these to small sealed jars, because a few are still leaking around the edges. I will use the storage box for a palette when I mix for specific projects. Overall, I really like the product.
Update December 2021: my gouache set has 6 months storage now. They do dry once the lid is open. Despite i kept them in a cool place with the case closed. Working from the dried colour is not fun. I would prefer tube color now. Too late to return! The gouache set of 56 color miya arrived on time and very well packed. No damage. The set comes in a very useful case and a full colour chart. I didn’t use it a lot yet, but did some strokes and love the jelly texture. I didn’t open all godet. I open those i need and keep the lid on. The gouache colour are vibrant and nice. Very opaque when non diluted. You can use as watercolour with water to have a partial translucent effect.
I was super worried the contents would be too. Luckily, the actual MIYA box was fine! Quality of the paint is really good! It’s my first time using gouache so i was excited! Gotta take one star off because 2-3 of the little jelly cups were a bit damaged and the paint leaked the slot. Just put some tape over the bottom to fix it. Not a big issue. I enjoyed the actual paint. Easy to use. Finally found the perfect medium to use that works as both like watercolor and acrylic! The paint doesn’t dry as fast as everyone else say. The colors are vibrant and I can tell they jelly cups will last me a while! A little goes a long way! From what I’ve seen in past reviews, it’s a hit and miss and depends on your delivery person especially during the holidays, packages are just getting tossed left and right to ship stuff out. I waited a week for mine to arrive! Still, I recommend this !
